Television often fills the final month of the year with a mix of big franchises, new dramas, and glossy escapism, and this December is no exception. A wide range of series is arriving across major platforms, offering everything from sweeping Western conflict to psychological tension, family-friendly fantasy, and even a return to some of the most popular shows of the past few years. Here is a list of nine must-watch shows this December:
1. The Abandons:

A gritty Western set in 1854, the story centers on two widows who hold power in very different ways. Fiona Nolan, played by Lena Headey, runs a cattle ranch and leads a chosen family made up of people who have been pushed aside by society. On the other side of their clash is Constance Van Ness, played by Gillian Anderson, who comes from wealth and is determined to protect the mining fortune her late husband left behind. Both women want control of the same land, which sets off a struggle marked by revenge, difficult choices, and shifting alliances. The series leans into the harshness of the American frontier while also exploring loyalty within nontraditional families. It lands on Netflix on 4th December.
2. The War Between the Land and the Sea: Viewers who enjoy the world of ‘Doctor Who’ can look forward to this series created by Russell T Davies as part of the extended Whoniverse. The show imagines what happens when an ancient aquatic species rises from the ocean and begins interacting with humans. Their arrival triggers a global emergency. A member of UNIT named Barclay is tasked with trying to calm the situation while Salt, an ambassador from the ocean species, attempts to mediate. The production promises sweeping action, high stakes, and a message that reflects present-day concerns about climate and conflict. It premieres on BBC One on 7th December before arriving internationally at a later date.
3. Little Disasters: A psychological drama based on Sarah Vaughan’s bestselling novel. Diane Kruger stars as Jess, a woman whose friendship circle begins to unravel after a frightening trip to the hospital. When Jess brings her injured young daughter into the emergency room, the doctor who sees her happens to be one of her longtime friends. Jess is unable to clearly explain how the injury occurred, which leads to a report to social services and a widening sense of unease. The story digs into trust, motherhood, and the subtle tensions that can grow between people who once felt close. It has already aired in the UK and begins streaming in the US and Canada on 11th December.
4, Taylor Swift: The End of an Era: Premiering on 12th December, it offers a detailed behind-the-scenes look at the global tour that dominated headlines for more than a year. The six-part series follows Swift through rehearsals, planning sessions, and casual backstage moments, while featuring appearances from the collaborators and friends who joined her along the way. Disney+ is also releasing a concert film on the same day, which captures the final stop of the tour in Vancouver.
5. Fallout: The first season of this adaptation of the blockbuster video game became one of the biggest hits for Prime Video. The new episodes pick up with Lucy and The Ghoul crossing the Mojave Desert together, each driven by separate personal quests. Lucy wants to find her father and hold him accountable for his actions, while The Ghoul is searching for clues about the family he lost. Their uneasy partnership takes them toward New Vegas, a setting that longtime fans of the game will immediately recognize. The season, premiering on 17th December, adds new faces, including Justin Theroux and Macaulay Culkin, and continues the show’s blend of bleak landscape, dark humor, and emotional depth.
6. Emily in Paris: Instead of reinventing itself with major plot twists, the show embraces its signature charm by moving its main character to beautiful new locations. Emily begins the fifth season living and working in Rome while still traveling to Paris and Venice. Her romance with Marcello continues, her work life remains chaotic and glamorous, and her friends and colleagues bring the same mix of drama and humor that made the show a hit. The new season premieres on 18th December.
7. Amadeus: A historical drama which premieres on 21st December. While many viewers know the 1984 film, this series dives deeper into the world of Mozart, the jealousy he inspired, and the complicated relationship he had with his rival, Antonio Salieri. Will Sharpe plays Mozart as a spirited and self-aware artist, while Paul Bettany takes on the role of Salieri. The production recreates the grandeur of the eighteenth-century royal court and fills every scene with the music that made Mozart one of history’s most admired composers.
8. Stranger Things: The fifth season has been described as the final chapter and arrives in stages. Episodes begin dropping in late November, three more come on Christmas Day, and the last episode will appear on both Netflix and select cinemas at the end of the month. The creators have said that this season closes every storyline they wanted to finish, though a future spin-off with new characters is planned.
9: The Copenhagen Test: Simu Liu stars as an intelligence analyst who discovers that his mind has been compromised by unknown forces. Someone has gained access to everything he sees and hears. This leads him into a frantic search for answers while he tries to protect himself and prove that he is not working against his own agency. The series, premiering on 27th December, blends science fiction with espionage and is produced by James Wan, known for his work in horror.
Taken together, these releases show the wide range of storytelling available this winter. Some offer comfort, others offer suspense or spectacle, but all in all, December provides plenty of reasons to settle in and watch.
